Peter Watt - First Blog Post - 22 April 2011

Sunday 17th April 2011 was a significant day in the life of WCF. It was a day on which the past blended into the present and married the future. It was a day on which we crossed a line, and started the next phase of the journey from prophetic promises into prophetic fulfilments. A few things changed, and many things stayed the same. It was a day on which our existing identity was reflected, but also re-defined under a new banner. It was a day on which we reinforced the responsibility of the prophetic purpose and vision that God has called this local church to pursue, without distraction or fear.

The nostalgic and picturesque walk through the past 30 years of WCF was sometimes funny, and other times poignant as we were reminded of some of the creative and unpopular paths that God has guided WCF along. The central role of the prophetic ministry in defining who we have become was the constant theme that echoed throughout, as the church has endeavoured to follow the Lamb wherever He goes (Rev...).

For some people, this was a stirring up of memories and emotions, a recognition of "old" faces, and the significance of personal decisions and sacrificial choices. For others, it may have been the first time to witness and understand the story of WCF, and to get a perspective of all the little river lets, streams and cross-currents that have fed into the river of WCF's journey towards the sea.

As always, West City Fellowship, remains focussed on the utter relevance of the Gospel in addressing all the issues that surround us in this fallen world - from sin, to sickness, relational breakdowns, immorality, uncertainty, poverty and injustice. The church aspires to be a place where cultures and variety intersect under God. WCF is both a family for all who desire to belong, but also espouses the family unit as a vital and pragmatic building block of community and society.

West City Fellowship remains acutely aware of our geographic location outside the strategic city of Durban - the gateway and economic hub of the province, and a significant port city on Africa's east coast. We align our vision with God's purpose for Africa in this particular period of human and church history. We are aware of the global climate and the local context, and seek insight from God as to how to usher His Kingdom rule into all of these spheres of responsibility and opportunity.

Eph 2:10: "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them."

Looking forward to the exciting days that lie ahead!
